Using Google Analytics on your Website

Written by Vanessa on May 13th, 2010

Many writers feel that once content has been created and posted to their website, their job is done. That’s not true. If you don’t measure, you can’t analyze. If you don’t analyze, you cannot improve. The easiest way to analyze is by using Google Analytics and implementing it on your website. It’s free so there is no excuse not to use it.

I recently read a great article on Google Analytics in Website Magazine and they had some great advice on how to measure the results for Google Analytics that I wanted to share.

There are many key indicators that Google Analytics relies on that can be measured, if you are unsure of how to install the program or read the reports and know what to look for let us know, we are here to help!

6 Measurements to Maximize Impact

1) Readings per writer and writer impact – Find out how many times a particular writers articles or posts are being read.

2) Page impact – You can find out how frequently, and during which visits a certain page was viewed and led to completing a goal.

3) Satisfaction – Measuring visitor satisfaction per writer and page.  Implement a way for visitors to rate pages or offer a survey.

4) Time spent writing vs. reading – This measurement will show if there are pages that readers spend less time reading.

5) Unread Pages – Pages need to generate at least one page view to be included in Google Analytics.  Pages with no views will not be listed.

6) Cost per reading – This means the writers cost/number of times the writer’s articles have been read.

Using web analytics, you can measure the effectiveness of content.  It is possible to measure how well the content is performing even for purely informational websites.

4 Outdated SEO Tactics

Written by Vanessa on April 23rd, 2010

1) Keyword Stuffing

In the past search engines were unsophisticated.  Adding a ton of keywords to your content was all you needed in order to rank with the search engines.  Search engines have matured significantly since then using sophisticated algorithms to achieve search rankings.

INSTEAD – Create your content for people not search engines.  Use keywords in your headers, sub headers and title tags.

2) Blog SPAM Commenting

Before spammers would aggressively drop links into blog comments and consider that link building.

INSTEAD – Produce something of value.  Create well written content.  This will attract quality links such as links from other blogs and news sources.  Search engines value this more often than blog comments.

3) Search Engine Submission

It is amazing that SEO companies continue to offer search engine submission services, and still believe that submitting to search engines is necessary.  It is not! Search engines these days (Google) are so advanced in indexing new content that this service has become obsolete.

INSTEAD – To get your website discovered you can drop links to your site in social media platforms such as Twitter,Facebook  and You Tube.  For example, if you have a Twitter account, tweet a link to your website or add the website link to your profile.  Social media platforms are consistently crawled by search engines so these links will be discovered quickly.

4) Link Exchanges

Reciprocal linking is not really an issue in moderation.  The problem occurs when webmasters actively engage in link exchange schemes to influence rankings intentionally.  By the way Google considers this a violation.

INSTEAD – Offer genuine quality testimonials to businesses you work with.  A testimonial is an easy and polite way to get a link to your website in a favorable light.

SEO changes constantly sometimes daily.  Avoid outdated methods.  If you are unsure always seek out the expertise of a professional.  After all you don’t want your website penalized for using banned SEO methods.

Is a Content Management System for you?

Written by Vanessa on April 13th, 2010

Content is defined broadly as all information contained within your website and/or application. It can come in the form of text, images, audio/video and animation. This is where your company is provided with amazing opportunities in showcasing what you can do. However, it can be one of the most challenging and complicated tasks a company has to deal with and organize. This refers to a robust system designed to facilitate clients managing and updating their website content to varying degrees. We in web land call that a Content Management System (CMS). Managing content online is vastly different than in  other traditional forms of marketing. Plus, today’s consumers are used to highly functional websites containing tons of fresh and up-to-date content. They thrive on it!

If content management is something your company is considering, here are some questions to keep in mind.

1. What will your formal and informal policies for content inclusion be?

2. How will content be entered and stored in the system?

3. What technology needs do you have?

4. Who is your actual audience? Internet is a pretty big place!

5. Who will maintain your content? Will you need to hire new staff?

6. How is your content management process going to evolve over the next year, 5 years or 10 years? Better know where you’re headed!

One of our Content Management Solutions involves blogging. Blogs allow for immediate interaction between you and your clients and can be a great way to run a proactive website as well as having the ability to update the content on your website as often as you like.

To my beautiful marketing team…..

Written by Vanessa on April 8th, 2010

The brochure you have done is a gift to my offering. It is a blessing. You have translated my vision, my ideals, and my practical strategic marketing needs into a beautiful and effective brochure. My standards are high. I have never received something on a first draft and loved it; especially something this complex.  I am very impressed with you and very thrilled that I have you on my team.

I LOVE the image of the hands and the butterfly. You knocked that out of the park!

The way you translated my original brand will make the original designer of my logo very proud. I can’t wait to show it to him when it’s done.

The photos you chose are really growing on me. At first I wasn’t sure about some of the images but they speak to the heart of what my clients experience, and in turn the relief that I provide.

The use of Ane Marie’s wonderful photos, I think, will make her very proud.

Last, yet, absolutely not least, the three images that represent my motto are off the charts, cool. I love them!!!!!!!

Girls, watch out! My business is going to take off and I hope you’ll be with me each step of the way. It’s going to be a fun journey.

And Jen, thank you. I see why Tara, Joan and Vanessa trust you. And you did this job in 3 days! I’m very impressed and appreciative.

Social Media and what it means to your Brand.

Written by Vanessa on March 8th, 2010

I recently attended a very informative seminar put on by Social Media Management Company . They gave an overview of the many ways to bring awareness to a business brand by using Social Media.  We covered everything from Twitter and Facebook to Blogging and Keywords.  To many this can be a very intimidating and daunting task, since we don’t know what we don’t know!  The folks at Social Media Management Company really did a great job explaining the different ways to use all of the tools that are out there.

I really feel that at our company, SmartImage Media, we have all of the wheels in motion when it comes to Social Media.  SmartImage Media has a Facebook fan page, Twitter and this great blog that we add new information to several times a week on a variety of topics.  We are lucky in that we have a great team and as our boss says “The aces are in their places.”  We, as team members, have our own jobs when it comes to managing all the aspects of our social media campaign.  For those smaller companies Social Media Management Company can handle all of the details for them working behind the scenes to write blog articles, handle link building and even manage their Twitter and Facebook pages! The team at SmartImage Media works in tandem with them to program blogs and implement keywords and meta tags. That way business owners can work on their businesses instead of in them.  Social Media may not be as daunting a task as you thought, we are all here to help,  our clients get the attention they need and deserve.  After all your brand is only as successful as your marketing plan.  Social Media should be a major part of that plan, it is the fastest most cost effective way to get your name out there!  Stay tuned and keep tweeting.

Effective Planning for Website Design & Development

Written by Vanessa on February 25th, 2010

Here is a story from my own experience:

A major firm decided they wanted to overhaul their website adding a significant amount of complex functionality e and wanted the project to be completed in a 4 month period.  The goals and objectives of the site were very vague and no planning was done to validate the time line.  In other words the right hand did not know what the left hand was doing, all they knew was they wanted the site up and running in 4 months! Our web team jumped in feet first in order to reach our deadline, without an approved plan of action and clearly defined goals. We were playing a constant cat and mouse game to get the information we needed in order to execute the project successfully. At the end of the day the project could not be completed in the expected 4 month time period, deadlines kept getting pushed back and the client was unhappy to say the least.

That being said I offer the following advice……………..

The most successful websites have one thing in common, a disciplined approach to project planning and execution.  Most business owners feel they don’t have the time to plan so they jump in feet first without defined goals and expect the website to be up and running in an unreasonable amount of time. The end result is they are not happy with the outcome because the proper planning was not done up front.  There is a better way!

Get the goals and strategy first, what is the purpose of the website? The best execution on the planet cannot save a failed strategy.

Execute the project in phases, everything does not have to be done at once. With goals in mind you can prioritize and identify the features that are most important to the project and schedule them out accordingly.

Don’t over simplify when it comes to site functionality and outcomes. Down the road all that really does is push problems to the end of the project where they will multiply and end up blowing up your project budget and most likely stress out the individuals involved in the project.

Insist on a project plan, set deadlines and create a plan to back it up before beginning any work, if there is no plan there is no reliable launch date and expectations will not be managed effectively.

At the end of the day you want to win consistently and the way to do that is be the BEST rather than the FIRST!

Smart Image Media insists that our clients do proper planning before commencing a web project . We are happy to assist them in doing so – it’s part of our company’s process of delivering excellence.
